The Lamborghini Urus SUV concept made its first debut in the 2012 Beijing motor show. Notably, in an interview with Bloomberg during this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winklemann confirmed that the production for the Urus will begin in 2017.

He said, "The luxury SUV market is poised to continue to grow."

Winklemann's statement seems to be referring to the trend set by other luxury automobile makers who are also focused on veering away from sedans and venturing into the world of the SUV market. In an article on New York Daily News, Porsche released the luxury-SUV Cayenne back in 2004 while the Macan, its compact crossover SUV, has just been confirmed for production this year. It was also reported that Bentley will be revealing a still unnamed sport utility vehicle in 2016.

Erich Hauser, an automotive analyst from the International Strategy & Investment Group, explains that the emerging market trend is due to the fact that SUVs have "better price points and better residual value" than sedans. They also appeal to the consumers' need for cars with "better ground clearance" for easier navigation through poorly kept roads.

IndianCarsBikes reports that Lamborghini has not yet released a production model for the Urus but potential buyers seem to be very pleased with its 2012 concept model.

Unlike its competitor Bentley, which is planning on producing a more luxury-oriented SUV, Lamborghini is more focused on the performance of their newest product. It will have a shorter wheelbase and its chassis will be constructed using carbon-fiber and aluminum to make it lighter than its Bentley competitor.

Based on its 2012 model, the Urus will have a 584-horsepower from a turbocharged 5.2 liter V10 engine. The concept model was rated as having a top speed of 205 miles per hour.

Lamborghini is targeting to sell around 3,000 units of the Urus during its first year with a marketing focus on China, United States, Europe, and the Middle East.
