Disney has released the first trailer to the "Sleeping Beauty" spin-off "Maleficent."

The new trailer reveals the first images of Angelina Jolie as the evil witch and also shows images of Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. The movie also has a similar look to "Alice in Wonderland" and "Oz: The Great and Powerful."

According to a press release from Disney, "the story finds Maleficent (Jolie) living an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent, a beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, she faces an epic battle with the invading king's successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora (Fanning). As the child grows, Maleficent realizes Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent's true happiness as well."

The film marks the return of Jolie to the silver screen after an absence of four years. Her last appearance was in the 2010 Golden Globe nominee "The Tourist." She later directed the 2011 Golden Globe Nominee "In the Land of Blood and Honey" and is currently working on her second film "Unbroken," which is slated for release this year.

The new film marks the third time Disney has transformed a classic movie into a new live-action film. The first foray was in 2010 when Tim Burton directed the successful "Alice in Wonderland," a remake of the original animated film, which emphasized the character of the mad-hatter. In 2013, Sam Raimi directed "Oz: The Great and Powerful," which was a prequel to the 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz." Disney is also currently working on a remake of "Cinderella," which is slated to star Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Lily James. The studio also has plans for a "Beauty and the Beast" remake but very little information has been revealed about the project.

"Maleficent" also stars Sharlto Copley and Juno Temple. It was directed by Robert Stromberg and produced by Jolie and Joe Roth. Disney will release the movie on May 30, 2014 in 3-D.
