Former teacher Carmen Fariña will be in charge of running the education system in New York during the government of Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The Associated Press shared that the Mayor-Elect of New York announced during a press conference in Brooklyn that the biggest education system in the U.S. will be run by Carmen Fariña who has been a member of his team since the electoral campaign.

"It's a great privilege to be able to come back to a system that still needs a lot of work, but to be able to do it from the position of a progressive agenda. We're going to have a system where the parents are real partners," the upcoming leader of the school system said.

During his electoral campaign Bill de Blasio faced the results of Mayor Michael Bloomberg who said he was "an education Mayor". But the Mayor-Elect criticized Bloomberg's policies and said he would enact drastic changes for the benefit of public education.

Carmen Fariña was the principal of many public schools in New York and according to Bill de Blasio she's the perfect person to lead the education system thanks to her vast experience, and her knowledge of the problems and necessities of education.

The AP said that the Mayor-Elect will be inaugurated on January 1st and among the plans he has there is one to implement a system of universal preschools and some extracurricular programs that will allow children to learn after the end of their school day.

Bill Blasio's children study in the city's public schools and said that Fariña's responsibilities are great and added that this is one of the most important decisions he will take at the start of his term.

"This is literally one of the most important decisions I will make as a Mayor and one of the most personal. Becoming responsible for the lives of 1.2 million children can be one of the most sacred missions in government anywhere in this country," New York's Mayor-Elect said.
