A woman who did not want to be identified and who works on fifth Avenue told the Latinos Post that she ran into a retail store after realizing what was happening.

"After what happened in Aurora, I started feeling it could happen anywhere. So as soon as I heard the shots, it was getting cover for me," she said.

The cause of the shootings is still unknown and Reuters is citing a familiar source saying "there was no apparent link to terrorism."

The Empire State Building is located on the busy and renowned Fifth Avenue near to Penn Station as well as Grand Central terminal - both heavily populated areas.

Other widely covered shootings this year include the Aurora theater shooting where 12 people lost their lives as well as the Sikh temple shooting that left seven people dead including the shooter.
