Washington D.C Film Critics Winners, Recap: '12 Years a Slave' Wins Best Film of the Year

Filmmaker Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" took home the Best Film of the year award at the Washington D.C Film Critics.

The movie also received the Best Director award for McQueen, Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o. The movie also received the Best Acting Ensemble award as well the Best Adapted Screenplay and the Best Original Score accolade.

"Gravity" continued its award race winning Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Front-runners Cate Blanchett and Jared Leto continued winning their respective Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor categories.

Meanwhile, Spike Jonze won the Best Original Screenplay award for "Her," while Tye Sheridan won the Best Youth performance award for his role in "Mud."

Disney's "Frozen" won the Best Animated film award while "Blackfish" won Best Documentary. Belgium's Oscar submission "The Broken Circle Breakdown" took home the Best Foreign Film award.

"Lee Daniel's The Butler," which has been absent from the awards circuit, received the Joe Barber award for Best Portrayal of Washington D.C.

The Washington D.C Film Critics also nominated "Her," "American Hustle," "Gravity" and "Inside Llewyn Davis" for Best Picture.

The Washington D.C Film Critics have never been known for predicting the Oscar winner but five winners have gone on to get nominated for the Oscar including "Zero Dark Thirty," "The Artist," "The Social Network," "Up in the Air," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "No Country for Old Men."
