On Dec. 7 the Teatro Alla Scala di Milano will open their 2013-14 season with Verdi's "La Traviata."

The season will unveil a new production by Russian stage director Dimitri Tcherniakov who is best known for his work at the Paris Opera.

The opera will star German Coloratura Soprano Diana Damrau as Violetta, Polish tenor Piotr Beczala as Alfredo, and Serbian baritone Zeljko Lucic as Germont. Daniele Gatti will conduct the orchestra and chorus.

The opera is one of Verdi's most popular works and is based on the Alexandre Dumas' novel "La Dame aux Camelias." The work tells the story of Violetta Valery who gives up her love for Alfredo when his father asks her to leave him.

Damrau made her role debut in March at the Metropolitan Opera where she received rave reviews for her portrayal. Our own David Salazar called her performance a "revelation."

"Damrau's performance was mesmerizing from start to finish with all the aforementioned nuances creating a fully fleshed arc of a frustrated woman learning to appreciate life and then coming to terms with losing it," wrote Salazar

Beczala is coming off a successful run of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" at the Metropolitan Opera, which was transmitted live in HD. Lucic recently starred in "Tosca" at the Vienna States Opera.

The opening night will be transmitted live in HD and live streamed on ARTE. "La Traviata" will also be performed on Dec. 12, 15, 18, 22, 28, 31, and Jan. 3.

START TIME: 3:00 p.m. EST
