Apple's latest desktop operating system has made its presence known among rival computer platforms, based on new market share data.

According to NetApplications, Apple's OS X 10.9, also known as OS X Mavericks, already became the most-utilized Apple operating system during the month of November.

OS X Mavericks accounted for 2.42 percent of the desktop operating system market share, which also placed the platform in sixth place. OS X Mavericks' placing topped OS X Mountain Lion, or OS X 10.8, which garnered 1.85 percent, or seventh place.

"While these numbers are nowhere close to the market share enjoyed by iOS, it does show that customers are steadily upgrading to the free OS weeks after its debut," reported CultofMac's Luke Dormehl.

OS X Mavericks' position might have been the result of the software's price; it's free. Apple's previous operating system, OS X Mountain Lion, was priced at $19.99 when it launched in 2012. OS X Mavericks includes iBooks, a maps app, a streamlined Calender, updated Safari, iCloud Keychain, multi-display support, and Finder Tab and Tags for improved organization.

The top desktop operating system during November went to Microsoft's Windows 7, which accounted for 46.64 percent of the market share. Windows 7's nearest competitor was a fellow Microsoft operating system, the Windows XP.

Windows XP placed second with 31.22 percent, ahead of Windows 8's 6.66 percent.

Microsoft's dominance continued at fourth place with the Windows Vista platform with 3.57 percent ahead of the Windows 8.1's 2.64 percent.
