Colombian superstar Shakira may be keeping her yet-to-be confirmed pregnancy under wraps due to an illness the singer has.

According to HuffPost Voces, Shakira has toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease that can prove extremely harmful to developing fetuses. The disease, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 60 million people carry, is contracted through exposure to cat feces or undercooked meats.

The Colombian singer is said to be under strict observation under her doctor, Victor Gonzales-Quinteros, reports HuffPost Voces.

The star's pregnancy with FC Barcelona defender boyfriend Gerard Pique was confirmed by Colombian magazine Gente earlier this month. The magazine also added that Shakira and Pique have taken to naming their baby "Ulicito" prompting rumors that they are expecting a boy although nothing has been officially confirmed.

Reports add that Shakira is set to give birth in January through a cesarean section.

The couple met in 2010 during the filming of her music video for the South Africa World Cup "Waka Waka" (This Time for Africa). Pique, a player for the Spanish National Team, went on to win the World Cup in 2010 and recently won the 2012 Euro Cup Championship. The singer confirmed their relationship through Twitter and Facebook on March 29, 2011 after months of speculation.
