On the last episode of "Revolution," a central character who everyone loved to hate met his demise. Or did he?

In "Dead Man Walking," flashbacks revealed exactly when Monroe (David Lyons) turned to the dark side. He is shown a couple of years after the Blackout as a family man with a baby on the way. When the baby dies due to complications, Monroe turns into the monster that fans have always known. He then pillages a town and kills everyone in it.

Back in the present day, Monroe wants to start a war with the Patriots by setting them up for the murder of the Ranger. Monroe and Miles (Billy Burke) also do some research and discover some of the Patriots' plans. But the Patriots find Monroe and take him into custody for the murder.

The Patriots make a public example of his capture, and soon sentence Monroe to death. Miles tries to set up a breakout, but Rachel tells the authorities, since she wants to see Monroe dead because he killed her son.

Monroe then receives a lethal injection and dies, and is quickly buried. Yet, before the night is over, Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) takes a shovel and starts to dig him up, perhaps thinking that whatever brought Aaron (Zak Orth) back from the dead can also resurrect Monroe.

After Monroe's death, Texas and the Patriots sign a treaty, handing Willoughby to the Patriots and leaving Miles, Rachel and the rest at their mercy. It's also revealed that the man who turned Monroe in is none other than Dr. Gene (Stephen Collins), who was a Patriot the whole time.

The synopsis of the next episode, "The Patriot Act," reads: "When Rachel discovers some unsettling truths, Miles is going to do what he does best to overcome obstacles before him and those he cares about. In the meantime, Charlie will share a moment with her mom as Neville and Jason continue with their struggles between father and son."

Elizabeth Mitchell shared some hints about upcoming story arcs to TVLine. As for Rachel's troubled relationship with her daughter, Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos), they will revisit their issues soon enough. "There is some sweet stuff coming up, which is good," Mitchell said. "It's always hard to see two people who love each other at odds all the time."

She also said that Dr. Horn, played by Zeljko Ivanek, is not simply a nefarious character.

"He [Dr. Horn] reminds me of any kind of a war crimes doctor, in that there's something about him that is truly, truly scary. If you go through all those names that make you shudder, I feel like he might be up there with them," Mitchell said. "But what I feel like they've done, which is interesting, is they've made him very human. I can't say why that is, because it hasn't happened yet, but he's not just dark. You can see why he does what he does. I like that in a character."

She also discussed whether or not Rachel will enjoy any romance in the future.

"I imagine Rachel is like, "Heyyyyy!" [Laughs] All work and no play! Poor Rachel," she said. "You want her to grab any happiness she can. And I would love to see that, because that's part of the humanity of it all. But we'll see!"

As for Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) and his son, they won't be rejoining the group for awhile.

"Neville is on his own adventure right now, and its about to get really hot, which I really like," she shared. And with Neville fighting the Patriots, she said, "For all intents and purposes, he's our best hope right now."
