What’s a superhero without a full roster of formidable villains? Our favorite heroes are only as good as the enemies they defeat. Without admirable foes, what’s their purpose? A hero has to prove themselves, and lucky for Spider-man, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so in the upcoming “Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

Earlier this week, an official Spider-Man website revealed that Spidey could be facing more than just Electro and The Rhino in the upcoming sequel. Not only could there be an entirely new villain added to the mix, but the origins of the Green Goblin may also be tossed in to spice things up. The website’s post reads as follows.

“Despite the assault on Oscorp Tower two weeks ago and the revelation that disgruntled Oscorp employee, Dr. Curt Connors, was responsible for the attack, Oscorp’s stock has climbed four points.

“Oscorp spokesman Douglas Menken provided some details from the meeting, including that the construction on the prototype alternative energy power plant, complete with hydroelectric tower, is on schedule for completion within the next year.

“Other highlights included a preview of a flight harness for the military and significant advancements in robotics by the head of the engineering division, Spencer Smythe.”

In the comic books, J. Jonah Jameson hires Spencer Smythe to hunt down Spider-Man. If the movie follows the comcis, Spidey will have his web-slinging hands full this time around. Will it be too much to bear? Doubtful, but you can never be sure.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” hits theaters May 2, 2014.
