DC Comics fans have long been yearning for the “Justice League of America” movie, Warner Bros. Studios has had difficulty getting the project off the ground, but there’s hope on the horizon. While it might not be exactly what fans are hoping for, it will at least scratch our DC superhero itch.

Although the new Constantine TV series is now in the works from “Dark Knight” and “Man of Steel” writer David S. Goyer, director Guillermo del Toro still plans to move forward with his proposed “Dark Universe” project. Essentially a Justice League Dark film, it will feature DC Comics characters such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, The Spectre, and many others, IGN reports.

“We talked about it at DC and Warners, and I feel confident that the two properties can exist at the same time,” del Toro said. “I think that DC is trying to create a great universe of characters and expand it and make it clear to the audience that it’s a landscape of characters, and not just one that’s dependent on one or two characters.”

While the production on NBC’s John Constantine TV series won’t impede del Toro’s “Dark Universe” plans, the project is moving forward at a crawling pace. Del Toro said that he’s still writing a film but the script is still unfinished, “but it’s still active,” he added.

Meanwhile, the “Justice League of America” movie may take longer than expected. What else is new? The primary reason behind its prolongment this time around is the studio's decision to release several other DC superhero movies prior to the Justice League film. During the San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. announced its plans to release a "Superman vs. Batman" movie, which will be directed by Zack Snyder, and a movie based on "The Flash." "The Justice League of America" will have to take a backseat until 2016, but that's better than nothing.

In the meantime, however, keep your ears peeled for more details surrounding del Toro’s “Dark Universe.”
