A 77-year-old man managed to successfully land the small plane in which he traveled, after the pilot passed out, British media reported on Wednesday.

According to first reports, the incident happened on Wednesday, October 9 at the Humberside airport, in northeast England.

The pilot and the passenger, who has been identified as John Wildey, a 77-year-old man with no aviation experience, were the only ones in the plane which had departed from the Sandtoft airport, 40 km from Humberside, reported Mirror News on its website.

After reporting the emergency to the control tower, two flight instructors told the man how to land the plane, a single engine Cessna 172, a feat he managed to achieve in his fourth try, the same source explained.

According to information shared by news agency EFE, quoted by newspaper La República, one of the instructors that advised Wildey told British press that the passenger had managed a "good landing".

"He didn't know they layout of the plane, he didn't have any lights, he was flying blind", the instructor said, who tried to calm Wildey down for over an hour to explain the landing procedure.

"You don't want him scared because anything could happen", the instructor added, quoted by the same source.

The 77-year-old who saved his and the pilot's life said that "My mouth was so dry I would have paid a million pounds for a glass of water", shares Mirror News.

Despite working for the Royal Air Force, Wildey didn't have any flight experience, so any type of mistake would have led to a potential disaster.

The pilot who passed out was later transported to a hospital; however, he lost his life after some hours, reports the quoted source.
