In November, Guatemala will host one of the biggest film festivals in Central America.

The International Central American Film Festival, known as Icaro, will run from November 14 through 21; it will be the 16th edition of the event. According to Icaro's official website, the festival is divided into two sections: one for Central American filmmakers and another for international artists. The website notes that all filmmakers who wish to be considered for the Central American section  must have five or more years of residence in a Central American country.

Additionally, the festival showcases a wide range of films including narrative fiction, documentaries, animation and experimental.

The event also gives out a number of awards to Central Americans including prizes for Best Director, Best Cinematographer, Best Screenwriter, Best Producer, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Art Director, Best Actress and Best Actor. There is no mention of a Best Picture for any of the categories on the website.

Submissions for the festival were accepted from May 6 through July 31 but no news has emerged about which films will be screened at the festival.

Aside from its main showcase in Guatemala, the festival is also hosting local versions in Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, New York, Panama, Costa Rica and Cuba. The New York edition is in its second year and opened on Sept. 9, 2013 with a screening of the Costa Rican film "El Regreso," which was directed by Hernan Jimenez. The New York segment runs through Sept. 13, 2013.

Icaro is one of many film festivals in Central America. Among the other major events are the Dominican Republic International Film Festival, the Guadalajara International Film Festival (in Mexico) and the Havana Film Festival.

The Icaro Film Festival has over 8000 likes on Facebook and over 3,500 followers on Twitter.
