The FIBA EuroBasket Championships started with a bang on Wednesday as upsets and nail-biting matches dominated the opening day of the three-week FIBA World Cup qualifier. On Thursday, the action is expected to get even more intense as all 24 participating teams try to gain some momentum in a very competitive tournament.

Defending European champion Spain lived up to their status as the team-to-beat in the European championship after crushing Slovenia 68-40 in the tourney opener. Former NBA veteran Rudy Fernandez led Spain in scoring with 15 points despite committing his fourth foul in the second half while Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio dished out seven assists.

Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol also grabbed a team-high 11 boards for the Spaniards, who will miss the services of Pau Gasol and Serge Ibaka throughout their campaign.

Up next for Spain will be host country Slovenia (3:00 p.m EST). The Slovenians are coming off a thrilling 62-60 victory over Czech Republic to get their first win. Jure Balazic scored 11 points while Phoenix Suns guard Goran Dragic had nine assists for Slovenia. Washington Wizards Jan Vasely chalked up 17 points and 7 rebounds in a loss for the Czechs.

Meanwhile, Russia didn't start their tournament well after suffering a 76-69 loss to Italy. T-Wolves guard Aleksey Shved recorded 17 points for the Olympic Games bronze medalist, but it was not enough to outlast Luigi Datome (25 points) and the Italian national team.

Russia is scheduled to play Greeks (3:00 p.m EST), who overwhelmed Sweden 79-51 on Day One. Former Houston Rockets point guard Vassilis Spanoulis had 13 points to lead Greece while Loukas Mavrokefalidis corralled nine boards in the victory.

Italy and Turkey are also set to square it off at 11:30 p.m EST while France looks to bounce back from an 80-74 loss to Germany when they take on Great Britain at 3:00 p.m. EST.
