Alexandre Desplat will compose the score for "Godzilla."

Indiewire reported that Legendary signed the French composer for the upcoming reboot film. Desplat is known for his work on a number of tentpole films. He recently worked on the last two "Harry Potter" movies and also scored New Line's "The Golden Compass."

The composer has also worked on a number of prestigious award-winning films and has been nominated for five Academy Awards for his scores in "Argo," "The King's Speech," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "The Queen."

Desplat has also worked with a number of auteurs including Terrence Malick, Ang Lee, John Curran and Nora Ephron.

This year Desplat scored Roman Polanski's "Venus in Fur," Jerome Salle's "Zulu," Stephen Frears' "Philomena" and George Clooney's "The Monuments Men."

The latest "Godzilla" made waves at the Comic Con in July where a number of viral videos and articles were released in anticipation of the film. During the event director Gareth Edwards revealed that he would try and honor the 1950s version of the monster. He stated, "We went through all of the previous Godzillas [for inspiration]. We did hundreds of designs. I wanted to experiment with everything. We're making this film in partnership with [Godzilla franchise owner] Toho Studios, so they had signoff on a lot of the designs. The way I tried to view it was to imagine Godzilla was a real creature and someone from Toho saw him in the 1950s and ran back to the studio to make a movie about the creature and was trying their best to remember it and draw it."

The new film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Kick-Ass"), Elizabeth Olsen ("Martha Marcy May Marlene"), Juliette Binoche ("The English Patient"), David Strathairn ("Good Night and Good Luck"), Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Ken Wattanabe ("Batman Begins"), and Sally Hawkins ("Blue Jasmine") and is written by Max Borenstein and Dave Callaham. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will release "Godzilla" on May 16, 2014 nationwide.
