Former NBA superstar Allen Iverson has officially announce his retirement, Slam Online reported.

According to the report, Iverson, who has not seen action in the NBA since February 2010, will officially hang up his jersey, signaling the end of his illustrious, but controversy-tainted basketball career.

Known as the one of the best scorers in NBA history pound-for-pound, the 6-foot 165-pound guard averaged 26.7 points and 6.2 assists during his 14-year career, which includes stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, and the Memphis Grizzlies.

The 38-year-old Hampton native, who won four scoring titles and was an 11-time All-Star, averaged 29.7 points to go along with 6.0 assists and 2.1 steals in 71 Playoff games.

Iverson was named the Most Valuable Player in the 2001 NBA season, wherein he averaged 31.1 points and led the Sixers to the Finals. He had his best scoring year during the 2005-06 season, posting 33.0 points on 44.7 percent shooting from the field.

"He might be the greatest athlete I've ever seen. I don't think there'll be another one like him," said former coach Larry Brown, who had on and off court conflict with Iverson during their time in Philadelphia. "I'm sure we faced a lot of obstacles, maybe even on a daily basis, but when it came time to play, to try to win a game, he tried to play as hard as he could for his coach."

During his bobblehead night in Philadelphia in March, the 1997 Rookie of the Year expressed a desire to return to the NBA, but no team tried to sign him up.

Iverson, who once played for Besiktas in Turkey, turned down an offer to launch his return through the NBA Developmental League, while also shunning lucrative offers to play in China.

"My No. 1 goal is trying to accomplish to be the best dad that I can. And if basketball is in my near future, then God will make that happen. But if not, I had a great ride and I've done a lot of special things that a lot of guys have not been able to accomplish and people thought I couldn't accomplish," Iverson said in March.

After creating thousands of headlines during his playing years, Iverson also became the talk of the town last December during his divorce proceedingd, which revealed his deep financial issues.
