Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time, the highly anticipated sequel in the beloved franchise is now available for owners of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to download and play for free right now. The announcement came from the game's Facebook page, and those interested in downloading the game can check it out in the iTunes store (where it has already shot to the top of the charts) as well as right here.

The game was originally scheduled for release earlier in the summer, but developer Popcap decided the wait several weeks before releasing the game to make sure the game's features such as cross-platform saves and player accounts were working properly. Popcap used the continent of Australia as a testing ground for the game, and the game's early reviews have been stellar, so those who have Apple devices should definitely download the free game and enjoy the the gameplay and it's variety of different missions and modes.

Popcap has released the game for free, but there are several premium items and unlockables that players can drop real-world currency on. These premium items include new plants as well as the ability to progress more rapidly through the game if they so choose. However, Popcap has stated repeatedly that players will not have to purchase additional levels and other items to complete the game, so those worried that the game would force gamers to pay to play will not have to worry.

The game offers players three different worlds initially to play through, Ancient Egypt, the Wild West and the Pirate Seas. Each different theme gives the players new maps to conquer as well as changing the aesthetic of the zombie enemies players must defeat. The sequel gives players additional means to defeat zombies by using touchscreens to let players squash zombies themselves using their fingers. With the wide variety of plants available to users, as well as the different maps, players can replay the levels endlessly as they try different combinations of plants to find the best way to maximize their zombie killing abilities. The game will also give players unique challenges and stipulations, such as limited sunlight or using a limited number of plants, which unlocks additional content for the game.

Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time could be one of the best mobile games to come out this year. No word yet on if the game will appear on other mobile devices such as Android powered smartphones, nor has Popcap revealed if the game will jump to consoles.
