Despite Apple's first place position in shipped tablets, Google's Android platform is the most utilized tablet operating system worldwide.
According to data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) on Aug. 5, Android is the most used tablet platform for the second quarter of 2013. Android's first place finish dethroned Apple's iOS, which sat at first place in the second quarter of 2012.

The IDC noted Android accounted for 62.6 percent of the tablet operating system market share, up from 38 percent during the second quarter of last year.
Apple's iOS finished nearly 30 percent behind Android while losing approximately 28 percent of its market share from 2012's second quarter. iOS finished the 2013 second quarter with 32.5 percent, down from last year's 60.3 percent.
Microsoft's two tablet platforms accounted for third and fourth place in IDC's rankings.
Microsoft's Windows finished third with four percent, an increase from one percent during the second quarter of 2012.
Microsoft's Windows RT made its debut with 0.5 percent, enough for fourth place. BlackBerry dissent continued as it rounded the top five with 0.3 percent.
BlackBerry OS' placing is down from the 0.7 percent it garnered for the second quarter of 2012.
"The tablet market is still evolving and vendors can rise and fall quickly as a result," said IDC's Mobility Tracker Programs' Program Manager Ryan Reith. "Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fueled products are starting to make notable progress into the market."
