Lochte's clear win casts doubts over whether Phelps can earn another gold medal against Lochte who poses as his number one rival. Phelps and Lochte will face-off in one more event, the 200 meter Individual Medley that takes place on Wednesday (click here for the complete schedule).

Doubts whether Phelps can earn gold in these Olympics are less unclear.

He is favorite to win the 200 meter butterfly, an event he holds the world record for since March 30, 2001 and last broke it in July 29, 2009. He is also favorite to win the 100 meter butterfly which he also holds the world record since August 1, 2009.

Although Phelps today lost to Lochte, Phelps still holds the World and Olympic record of the 400 meter Individual Medley event with 4:03.84, a record he established in Beijing's 2008 Olympics.

However, his fourth placing is the first time since the 2000 Olympics that Phelps ends an event without a medal.

Phelps is not only on the hunt for more gold medals, with 16 career Olympic medals, he is two shy from being the athlete with the most Olympic medals ever, a title currently held by Larisa Latynina from the former Soviet Union who has 18 medals (9 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze). Phelps has 14 gold and 2 bronze.
