While most gamers are focused on the San Diego Comic Con happening this weekend, there is some news coming from the lesser known PAX Australia, as Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has some major news to share concerning the marquee franchise of the company, Borderlands 2.  On Twitter the CEO confirmed that they will be announcing new Borderlands 2 DLC during the expo tomorrow, July 20. Pitchford had previously stated that more DLC was coming eventually during a Nerdist podcast, but did not give a schedule for a reveal date:

"We did a season pass for Borderlands 2, and the season pass was like, 'hey, if you buy the season pass, we would be doing four campaign add-ons and you can buy all four of them for the price of three, if you buy upfront'. So everyone was under the expectations that those would be the four DLCs and that's it. We are going to do more; we are going to do some other things. I don't have details exactly of it yet, 'cause we're not ready to announce what the other things are, but when the next campaign DLC comes, Assault On Dragon Keep [won't be] the end of it...We've got more stuff in the hopper that we're planning and getting pretty excited about. So if you're a Borderlands 2 fan, you don't have to be afraid that that's the end of it."

It remains to be seen if the game's season pass will cover this new DLC, but Gearbox only promised that four story DLC packs would be covered by the season pass, so that could indicate that fans will have to pay separately for this new content. There is some hope, however, in that the expansion that added a third playthrough and increased level cap that was free for those who bought the season pass, so this fifth DLC pack could be covered by the season pass as well.

Borderlands 2 have been a smash hit for Gearbox, and the game's DLC strategy has been something that other games should envy. It will be interesting to find out if Gearbox had always planned to release five story DLC packs for the game, or if they later decided to add this new DLC after the rousing success of the game and the DLC that followed. Perhaps this will be the set up for Borderlands 3, or at least tie up some loose ends that remain from Borderlands 2.  Either way stay tuned to find out more about this DLC announcement tomorrow.
