The 142nd edition of the British Open Championship is underway and the golfers didn't like what the Grand Slam tournament in store for them on the first day Thursday.

From four-time Grand Slam winner Phil Mickelson to veteran Ian Poulter, almost all participants shared reverberating qualms about the degree of difficulty the legendary Muirfield Golf Links provided on the opening round of play.

Mickelson, fresh from a fourth round collapse at the US Open Championships last month, fired at the tournament organizers for setting up an impossibly difficult course with very fast surface on the greens and dozens of traps all over the field.

"R&A should let go of [its] ego ... and just set the course up the way the best players can win." Mickelson told reporters right after he finished his first round at 2-under, according to ESPN. "The greens are dying and the holes are on the edges of slopes that the ball just simply won't stay."

All in all, the first day of the British Open left some of the participants with sleepless nights while others had that sort of relief after a very busy day on the course.

Former Grand Slam winners Rory McIlroy (8-over-79), Nick Faldo (8-over 79), Ernie Els (3-over 74) and Justin Rose (4-over 75) all had forgettable opening rounds. Meanwhile, Zach Johnson calmly took the top spot on the leaderboard with a fluid game, finishing the first round with 5-under-66 score.

The Spanish tandem of Rafael Cabrera Bello (4-under 67) and Miguel Jimenez (3-under 68) also put up a strong effort in the first round. The Americans quartet of Mark O'Meara (4-under 67), Dustin Johnson (3-under 68), Brandt Snedeker (3-under 68), and Tom Lehman (3-under 68) kept themselves at pace to take the lead from their countryman on the second day.

Tiger Woods, who enters the tournament as the favorite to win his fourth British Open Championship, struggled through the first eight holes but he picked it up on the back nine to finish just three strokes behind the leader at 2-under 69.

Day 2 of the British Open

The second day of the British Open won't be the same. It will be carnage on the course with lots of changes on the leaderboard. At this stage of the tournament, anyone still has a shot at making a run for it. However, they have to pick things up now before it's too late.
