The world watched as this year's biggest moon lit up the skies Sunday. The awe-inspiring "supermoon" was said to be about 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than usual. The supermoon happens when it reaches a point in its orbit that is closest to the earth.

Remember that myth about a person suddenly experiencing bizarre behavior caused by the full moon? Well, experts say there is no truth to that whatsoever. If there is any effect the supermoon had on people it was sheer excitement and exhilaration. Skywatchers and moon-gazers from across the world waited in anticipation to get a glimpse of the amazing celestial event. With their cameras on hand, the public took on social media to share their own glimpse of the moon from their side of the world. Some had photos of the moon behind buildings, by the Statue of Liberty, at the Manhattan skyline, above power lines, near historical landmarks, and more.

As expected, the supermoon went trending across the globe. Here are a few snapshots people took and posted on social media. For those who really waited patiently, they will all agree that it was well worth it.
