The Chicago Blackhawks won their fifth Stanley Cup in NHL History with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday.
The Bruins came out with tremendous energy and took five of the first six shots; the Blackhawks only managed one shot in the opening eight minutes of play. The team eventually broke through at the 17:19 mark when Tyler Seguin caught an aerial puck with his hand fired a pass to Chris Kelly at the side of the net. The forward one-timed the shot past Chicago goalie Corey Crawford to give Boston a 1-0 lead. The Bruins controlled play of the ensuing minutes and had a number of prime chances to double the score; most of the shots went wide. Chicago's best opportunity came on a partial breakaway for Michael Frolik that was stopped by Boston goalie Tuuka Rask. The Bruins continued to create scoring chances and wound up outshooting Chicago 12-6 in the first period.
The Blackhawks came out with more intensity in the second period equalized early in the frame when Captain Jonathan Toews scored on a 2-on-1 play at the 4:24 mark; it was Toews' third goal of the postseason and his second of this series. Chicago wound up outshooting Boston 9-6 in the middle frame for a total of 15 shots through two periods of play.
The Bruins took back the lead with 7:49 left in the third. The Blackhawks gave the puck away to David Krejci behind the net. Krejci slid it in front where Milan Lucic fired it in past Crawford to give Boston a 2-1 lead. However, the Blackhawks would not give up and Bryan Bickell scored with 1:16 left in the game to tie it up and send it to overtime. The Blackhawks' David Bolland would add another 17 seconds later to take a definitive 3-2 victory and capture the Stanley Cup.
The Blackhawks won the best-of-seven series four games to two.
