It was not too long ago that we reported that the Samsung Galaxy S2 would be receiving Android 4.2.2 according to the insiders over at SamMobile, but there's some bad news to go along with that: it will be the last Android update the Galaxy S2 receives from Samsung.

Another SamMobile report lists a number of Samsung devices confirmed for Android updates in the future. The Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 Plus, and a number of other older devices are all listed as having Android 4.2.2 be their last update ever. The information comes to SamMobile via an unnamed insider, and SamMobile does state that Samsung hasn't confirmed anything, so skepticism should be exercised. Still, given that the Galaxy S2 will be two years old, a couple lifetimes in the fast-moving tech market, it makes sense.

No release time frame has been given for the Galaxy S2 Android 4.2.2 update.

So what does this mean for Galaxy S2 owners? For starters, if having the latest version of Android is incredibly important, there are plenty of affordable handsets out there that can provide a more timely update experience. The Galaxy S3, for instance, is now heavily discounted thanks to the release of the Galaxy S4, and according to the same report, the Galaxy S3 should receive Android versions higher than Android 4.2.2.

Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy S2 will most likely follow the trend Samsung has followed in the past and bring some new Galaxy S4-esque features to the older cousin. Samsung ported over Galaxy Note 2 features to the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, and Galaxy Note via Premium Suite, and the company is expected to do the same. A leaked Android 4.2.2 build for the Galaxy S3 shows a heavy Galaxy S4 influence.

What will you do with your Galaxy S2? Wait until Android 4.2.2 rolls out or pick up a new smartphone?
