Apple's about to get even bigger. The tech giant is reportedly determined to increase its workforce by 50 percent within the next three years.

According to CBS News, Apple is projected to hire an additional 7,400 workers at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters as it prepares to build a new office building in 2016. Apple currently has 16,000 employed at or around its California headquarters, at facilities in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. However, Apple is responsible for approximately 73,000 workers worldwide.

The projection was disclosed as part of a report to win the 3.4 million-square-foot piece of land for the office complex.

Apple's efforts on achieving the campus date back to former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, before his death in October 2011 to pancreatic cancer.

According to the report, city officials at Cupertino are, for the most part, responding positively to Apple's proposal, but are seeking additional information before making a final decision. For the 16,000 employees, a combined salary of $2 billion was reported last year, or approximately $125,000 per employee.

The report comes as Apple continues to make its mark in California with its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting June 10. The WWDC will involve over 100 technical sessions in order to help developers create "innovate new apps," as Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller stated in April.
