The epic AMC series "Breaking Bad" will be coming to an end this summer, but one of the show's most memorable characters could very well be getting his own spin-off series. Saul Goodman, the unorthodox and zany lawyer played by Bob Odenkirk, whose witty humor and crazy antics served as a shimmer of comedic relief in an otherwise heart stopping drama, will likely make his way back to AMC in the wake of the "Breaking Bad" finale.
Vince Gilligan, creator of "Breaking Bad," recently provided fans with an update on the proposed spin-off. Although the idea is still in early development, things are looking up for Saul.
"Nothing's written in stone, but we are working away on it," Gilligan told Yahoo TV. "My writer and producer, Peter Gould, who created the character of Saul way back in season two, he and I have been talking, trying to figure our what a Saul Goodman show would look like. What would be the details of it, the particulars of it? And we're getting together to hash that out every chance we get."
The concept is there. The drive is there. Now all they need is a way to mold it into a TV show. Gilligan has toyed with the idea of the show serving as a sequel or prequel to "Breaking Bad" as well.
"So we just have to figure out exactly what kind of story we're telling. Is it a story about his creation of his own character? Because Saul Goodman, as he explains in his first episode, is not his real name. He is a self-created character, much like Heisenberg. Do we tell the story of his origins? We're still trying to hash that out. But there are a lot of fun possibilities."
At least the wheels are in motion. A Saul spin-off would certainly help ease the pain of the impending "Breaking Bad" withdrawal.
"Breaking Bad" will return to AMC on August 11.
