Although this past weekend marked yet another Memorial Day, the long weekend was shrouded in darkness. There was no beacon of light to get us through until Sunday. There was no "Game of Thrones." But not to worry, it will return this Sunday during its usual time on HBO, bringing plenty of clashing swords, conniving kings and unforgiving murder along for the ride.

The week's episode, which sadly is the penultimate episode of season 3, is titled "The Rains of Castamere." Although "The Rains of Castamere" is known as the notorious Lannister war anthem commemorating their victory over the House of Reyne of Castamere, it won't be the Lannisters that will be shedding the blood, however, Tywin Lannister will lend a helping hand.
Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark and Edmure Tully make their way to House Frey in the hopes that a marriage between Tully and Walder Frey's daughter, Roslin, will heal the wounds of their past and bring their two armies together. Unfortunately for the Starks, the infamous "Red Wedding" is nothing more than a merciless trap, set up by none other than Tywin Lannister.

House Frey takes its visitors into custody and beheads Robb Stark along with his direwolf Grey Wind. In an act of sheer brutality, the Frey's sew Robb's head onto the body of Grey Wind and vice versa. And the inhumane bloodshed doesn't stop there. They cut Catelyn Stark's throat, strip her naked, and toss her in the Trident River while Tully is taken hostage.
So although the Lannisters do not directly murder the King of the North and his mother themselves, it's easy to see how the episode title plays into the episode. Tywin had a hand in the massacre, which ended just as barbaric and ruthless as the Lannisters' original victory over the House of Reyne of Castamere.
"The Rains of Castamere" will air Sunday, June 2 on HBO.
