Season 8 of "How I Met Your Mother" ended on a rather interesting note. Some fans were thrilled to finally learn the identity of the mother, while others were upset with the decision to unveil the coveted secret with an entire season remaining in the series. Others were disappointed with the creators choice to cast Cristin Milioti as the mother, while other were enraged with social media for revealing the secret before they had the chance to actually watch the episode. All frustration aside, creators Carter Bay and Craig Thomas spoke with Entertainment Weekly about their decision and what fans can expect from season 9.

"One of our hard and fast rules [when we thought we were doing eight seasons] was that we didn't want to meet her until the very end. We felt like, now that we're doing another year, let's find an interesting new twist," said Bay.

"We've talked here and there about letting the audience see the mother before Ted. Would that be fascinating or let some air out of the balloon?" Thomas added. "There was something exciting about getting a little bit of her before Ted ever does. There was something that we felt like this audience who has stuck with us for all of these years we wanted to reward them with that."

"And to give ourselves the gift of having something. We didn't want to do season 9 unless we had something that just got us really excited to write it," Bay tacked on.

So how will the mother fit into the next and final season? According to CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler, season 9 will take place in entirety during Barney and Robin's wedding weekend and will show "how each character, before Ted, meets the mother. So, they each meet her independently before he does."

Fans can expect each episode dedicated to a different character meeting the Mother, with a slew of flashbacks and flash-forwards thrown into the mix.

"How I Met Your Mother" will return to CBS in September, 2013.
