One of video gaming's most beloved and longest lasting icons will once again star in a brand-new video game, as Pac-Man returns in Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, based on the upcoming Disney XD cartoon of the same name. The game will be on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U, and an additional Pac-Man side scrolling game will be released onto the Nintendo 3DS.

The game will take place in the Pac-World, a formerly peaceful place until the series iconic ghosts arrive from the Netherworld. It is up to Pac-Man to defeat the ghosts and their nefarious leader, Betrayus (possibly a spoiler-inducing name to the character's origins?), and save the Pac-World. Players will be able to mix traditional platforming with the series familiar ghost and pellet eating gameplay. Players will be able to explore the Pac-World and the various locals held within it, while encountering ghastly enemies and saving townspeople with Pac-Man's insatiable appetite.

The cartoon that the game is based on has yet to premiere, but is expected sometime this year. The cartoon is being created by Avi Arad, who comic book movie fans will recognize as an executive for Marvel Studios and a producer on a number of Marvel movies, including last year's The Amazing Spider Man and the original Iron Man movie..

Pac-Man first came to arcades in the original Pac-Man video game in 1980, and quickly became a pop culture icon. Pac-Man is one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time, in similar company to characters such as Mario, Sonic, and Donkey Kong. While many different video games have been created featuring Pac-Man, most fail to obtain the same level of popularity that the 1980's arcade cabinet games continue to have. The last Pac-Man game to be released on consoles was the Wii exclusive Pac-Man Party in 2010.
