The sales of overall mobile phones declined in most of the world, but not by enough to damper Samsung and Android during the first quarter of 2013.
According to Gartner, the Asia and Pacific region did not see a decline in mobile sales.
"More than 226 million mobile phones were sold to end users in Asia/Pacific in the first quarter of 2013, which helped the region increase its share of global mobile phones to 53.1 percent year-on-year," said Gartner's Principal Research Analyst Anshul Gupta. "In addition, China saw its mobile phone sales increase 7.5 percent in the first quarter of 2013, and its sales represented 25.7 percent of global mobile phone sales, up nearly 2 percentage points year-on-year."
In regards to worldwide mobile sales, smartphones accounted for 49.3 percent of mobile phones. The king of the first quarter of 2013 is Samsung with 30.8 percent of the market share, up 3.2 percent from the first quarter of 2012.
Apple finished behind Samsung, comfortably ahead of LG Electronics. The Cupertino-based organization finished at 18.2 percent, and unlike Samsung, it saw a decrease compared to the same time last year. Apple's market share was 22.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012.
As for the mobile platforms that make these devices operate, Google's Android easily trounced Apple's iOS. Android accounted for 74.4 percent of the first quarter of 2013 market share, ahead 17.5 percent from last year's 56.9 percent.
Apple placed second with 18.2 percent. Unlike Android, the iOS share is a decrease from the same months in 2012. The iOS, in 2012, had a market share of 22.5 percent.
Microsoft finished fourth, behind Research In Motion, by a 0.1 percent difference. Microsoft's Windows Phone finished 2.9 percent, up one percent from 2012.
