The wait is over. The secret is out. "How I Met Your Mother" fans have waited 8 seasons, 184 episodes to find out who the mother is, and now they finally have an answer. Unfortunately, it's not the answer most were hoping for. Many fans lashed out against the show, claiming that their time and energy devoted to the show had been a complete waste.

"7 years wasted..." said Brian Petit on TODAY Entertainment's Facebook page.

"Sad, as he waited all those years for THAT???" said Alan Weinraub.

Others were upset with the reveal of her identity. The official "How I Met Your Mother" Facebook page posted a picture of the mother, known as The Girl With the Yellow Umbrella and played by Cristin Milioti, right after the episode aired in the US, spoiling the surprise for many fans overseas. They too shared some not-so-positive remarks.

"You do realise that people who don't live in the US and haven't seen the episode are also fans of this page....right?" said Raffe Gold, whose post has more than 7,000 'likes' and 137 replies.

"Hey, so, spoilers are fun, right? Not everyone's seen the episode yet, man," said Josh Rickson, whose comment earned over 8,400 'likes.'

Although they don't translate directly, the 'likes' serve as indicators of other fans in agreement with Gold and Rickson. The Facebook page administrators may have jumped the gun with the reveal, spoiling the big secret for many angry fans. But then again, fans should know not to go onto the "How I Met Your Mother" Facebook page the day of the finale. Even if no photo had been posted, clearly fans would be ranting about the mother. So whose fault is it really?

Now that it's all behind us, it's time to look forward. The season may have ended, but the series is still breathing. Executive producer and co-creator Carter Bays says "It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years. And yet Cristin Milioti is, against all odds, exactly what we were looking for. She made us laugh on '30 Rock,' she made us swoon in 'Once,' and her ukulele skills are no joke."

Bays added that we'd get to know the mother "much better in the coming final season," which "will tell the epic story of the longest wedding weekend ever."

There are still plenty of questions to be answered. It's unclear what role the mother will take, and it's even more unclear when or if Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Colbie Smulders) will get married. Fans are just going to have to wait another season. The secret is out, but it's far from over.
