"The Walking Dead" may have ended in March, but that doesn't mean fans have lost interest in the zombie wasteland. On December 21, 2012, AMC renewed the show for a fourth season that will air in October. That gives fans an entire summer to speculate on what's to come of their favorite characters. Will The Governor's reign come to an end? What will happen to Carl and Rick Grimes? News has already begun to trickle in regarding the upcoming season, and here's what we've got so far.

Two weeks ago, creator Robert Kirkman hinted that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) could be killed off upon the show's return.

"We've been saying that no one is safe on this show, and I wouldn't rule out seeing the death of Rick Grimes at almost any point." Kirkman said while speaking with fans on an AMC blog.

He also mentioned that the new season's plot would focus on the relationship between Rick and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) rather than The Governor and his gradual descent into insanity in season three.

"I will say that the dynamic between Rick and Carl is going to be a central focus of the season, and it is going to change in some startling and interesting ways," he said.

If Rick does meet his maker, it's likely that Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) will take his spot as the leader of the group. Dixon is a role model character. Others look up to him as a protector, so he would be the natural choice in the wake of Rick's death.

"I think seeing Daryl or Maggie or Glenn picking up a larger leadership role in the group could pose some interesting possibilities," Kirkman said.

In other season four news, actor Lawrence Gilliard Jr. will be joining the cast. He'll take on the role of Roy Stark, the former Army Medic with a haunted past. Lawrence is known for his work in "The Waterboy," "The Wire" and "Gangs of New York."

"The Walking Dead" will return to AMC in October, 2013.
