A bus accident has resulted in 12 people killed and an additional 14 people injured, according to officials from the public safety department from the state of Veracruz, Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, the bus was traveling on a mountain road between the cities of Misantla and Xalapa when it hit a truck that was coming from the opposite direction last night, Saturday, March 31. The bus then plunged over a cliff after hitting the oncoming truck.

Once off the road, the bus flipped several times while it rolled down into a canyon about 300 feet (or 100 meters) deep before finally coming to a halt. Officials say there was thick fog on the mountain road. Low visibility could have contributed to the accident.

This accident comes the night before Easter Sunday and nearly a year since another tragic bus accident in the state of Veracruz. On Friday, April 20, 2012, 43 people were killed and another 17 people were injured, including seven children, after a trailer broke loose from a truck and crashed into a passenger bus near the town of Alamo in the northern part of Veracruz state.

The passengers in last year's tragic bus collision were farmworkers, and the vehicle was overfilled to 70 passengers, even though the bus only had capacity for less than 60. In that case as well as Saturday's accident, the two vehicles involved were traveling in opposite directions.

Little more is currently known about Saturday night's bus accident, but more details are expected to appear as they become available.
