Companies and other groups in the U.S. that create programs to targets the epidemic of childhood obesity in the country are reporting success in their attempts.

The groups say that the positive results in regard to the epidemic are due to more children exercising and having better access to healthy foods.

Nonprofit group Partnership for a Healthier America, that aims to get private companies and organizations to promise specific goals in the obesity epidemic, said that more than 1,700 cities across the nation are encouraging physical activity and have been successful in getting almost three million more children to engage in exercise.

The nonprofit group also said that if focus on decreasing the rate of obesity in the country is lost, about half of all Americans will be obese by 2030.

But other groups say that there is still more to be done in terms of curbing the trend.

"We're seeing pockets of progress toward reversing the childhood obesity epidemic," said Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

"For the progress to reach every corner of our country, we must redouble our efforts: parents, schools, nonprofit organizations, government at all levels, and the private sector."
