A dog is a man's best friend, and a best friend is always there. No matter the circumstances, a best friend will be by your side in time of need. That's how one particular dog lived up to its reputation as 'man's best friend' after preventing its owner from committing suicide.

The loyal German Shepard jumped in front of his owner's gun seconds before the trigger would have been pulled. The 63-year-old French woman is said to have fired her husband's .22-caliber rifle outside near her dog several times before pointing it at herself. That's when the dog took actions into its own paws.

"At the moment she pulled the trigger, her dog jumped on her and diverted the shot," police told the Telegraph, believing that the dog's super sensitivity, or alleged sixth sense, prompted it to take action. Her husband found her shortly after the incident and immediately rushed her to the hospital. The woman suffered a minor flesh wound to the chest during the incident, but doctors say the injury is not life threatening.

Owners have always believed that dogs have extraordinary perception, allowing the dog to know when its family is approaching the house and pick up on its owners' feelings. Scientific evidence also suggests that dogs have an electromagnetic sense that makes them sensitive to earth tremors and vibrations.

There have been many recent occurrences displaying dog heroics, and others that tarnish the K-9 reputation. A dog in Poland was accredited with saving a young, lost girl's life on Saturday, a tale much more glamorous than the Florida dog that shot its owner in the leg last month.

Today certainly is a dog's day as this particular German Shepard proved it truly is man's, or woman's, best friend.
