Microsoft is expected to announce the release of a tablet made in partnership with Barnes and Nobles. The announcement will be made on Monday at an event held in Los Angeles.

The tablet is expected to run its own version of Microsoft's own Windows operating system and will be the first time in 37 years that Microsoft makes a computer of its own creation. In the past, Microsoft has depended on third parties to create the hardware for its software. However, in recent years, Microsoft has lost ground to competitor Apple who makes its own software and hardware.

More importantly, the tablet also represents a concession that the industry may be moving away from the personal computer and toward the tablet.

Additionally, numerous sources, including CNet.com, TechCrunch.com, and TheVerge.com, are stating that the Tablet is to be produced in conjunction with Barnes and Nobles. The reports hint at the possibility of the tablet focusing on entertainment and including Xbox Streaming. There are also rumors that the tablet will run Windows 8 operating system of Windows RT. Microsoft and Barnes and Nobles announced a partnership in April with Microsoft investing $300 million into a new Barnes and Nobles subsidiary that would focus on the Nook. Barnes and Nobles would then revert by including Windows 8 into the Nook Digital Book Store.

Microsoft is not the only giant to determine to make its own hardware. Last year, Google announced its plans to acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, a move that will likely yield a Google-made phone to compete with Apple's iPhone.  Motorla Mobile is a maker of smartphones that utilize Google's own Android operating system. Prior to the move, Google used Microsoft's strategy of creating its own operating system and selling it to hardware makers. Unlike Microsoft, who soared in the 1980s and '90s with said approach, Google was far less successful in selling the Android system to tablet makers.

The venture will not be the first time Microsoft makes it own hardware. The Xbox 360 video game console sustained heavy losses in its initial launch before becoming a major hit. Microsoft made a music player called the Zune, but the device was unable to keep pace with Apple's iPod.
