Oscar night is upon us. The votes are in, the stars have already picked their dresses and all that remains to be seen is whether or not the prognosticators and precursors made the correct picks. Latinos Post has extensively covered the nominees and categories in anticipation for Hollywood's biggest night. Here is a breakdown of the major categories and final predictions.
Best Picture: "Argo" is expected to win thanks to its Guild victories and its wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Critics Choice.
Best Director: With Ben Affleck out of the running, the biggest front-runner is Steven Spielberg for his film "Lincoln." Michael Haneke could also pull off a surprise win for his film "Amour." The 70-year old Austrian director has never been nominated before and it is possible that he never gets nominated again; this fact could push many Academy voters to root for him. Nonetheless, look for Spielberg to win.
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln") is guaranteed to win this after sweeping precursors.
Best Actress: The race has long been a battle between Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook"), but 86-year old Emmanuelle Riva (her birthday is on Oscar eve) could surprise due to her age. Riva stars in "Amour."
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz ("Django Unchained") has picked up momentum with Golden Globe and BAFTA victories, but Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln") and Phillip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master") are top contenders. Hoffman will likely win due to the length and breadth of his role.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway has swept precursors for her turn in "Les Miserables;" she will win.
Best Original Screenplay: "Amour," "Django Unchained," and "Zero Dark Thirty" are the top contenders but the controversy that "Thirty" has stirred will likely put it out of contention. Tarantino has won most precursors and should take this one.
Best Adapted Screenplay: "Argo" will win this due to its front-runner status.
Best Foreign Film: "Amour's" best picture nomination essentially secures its victory in this race.
In the technical categories, "Life of Pi" and "Les Miserables" are expected to be major winners.
The ceremony starts at 8 PM and will broadcast on ABC. The Red Carpet starts at 5 PM and 7PM on ABC (from 6 to 7, ABC will broadcast the news).
