Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has commented on the progress and sales of the Surface tablet and is "super-glad" about it.

Speaking to Technology Review of MIT, Ballmer was asked if he is pleased with the idea of the Surface tablet.

"I'm super-glad we did Surface," Ballmer responded. "I think it is important-and not just for Microsoft, but for the entire Windows ecosystem-to see integrated hardware and software."

The Microsoft CEO added that the Surface tablet "is a real business."

Now with the Microsoft tablet in businesses, Ballmer indirectly mentioned the sales figures, but stated that the Surface will probably not make an impact in volume.

"In an environment in which there's 350 million PCs sold, I don't think Surface is going to dominate volume, but it's a real business," said Ballmer.

Microsoft has not disclosed the sales figures of their Surface tablet, but IDC's Mobile Device Tacking Program Manager Ryan Reith stated up to 900,000 Surface with Windows RT tablets were shipped during the last quarter.

"There is no question that Microsoft is in this tablet race to compete for the long haul," said Reith. "However, devices based upon its new Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems failed to gain much ground during their launch quarter, and reaction to the company's Surface with Windows RT tablet was muted at best."

The Surface tablet with Windows RT launched in late October exclusively through the company's shopping site but was seen in retailers such as Best Buy and Staples in December.

Microsoft launched the Surface with Windows 8 Pro earlier this month with a 64GB and 128GB model. The latter model was sold out on the same day as the launch but has since been re-stocked.
