Today's a big day for gamers: Sony is expected to unveil its next-generation PlayStation 4 home gaming console at an event in New York at 5 p.m. EST. While official details will finally be available then, we have some tasty tidbits to keep you cozy until Sony spills the beans. The latest batch of rumors is about the PlayStation 4's release date, pricing, and interactivity with smartphones and tablets.

According to Kotaku, it seems that the PlayStation 4 will release in November, just in time for the holiday season, as most previous speculation indicated. Kotaku also states that when it does release, the PlayStation 4 will be available in two versions - one for $429 and another for $529. The pricing scheme lines up with a previous report from The Times that stated that Sony would price the PlayStation 4 lower at launch than the PlayStation 3 was.

But that's not all - Kotaku goes on to state that users will be able to control their PlayStation 4 with a smartphone or tablet. It seems that gamers will not only be able to chat with their friends through the PlayStation network, but will also be able to purchase games on their mobile devices that will then be downloaded to the actual console itself. Bear in mind that Sony has recently expanded the PlayStation Store to work in browsers, so the concept itself isn't too far fetched.

The last bit out of the Kotaku report states that gamers can watch their friends playing a game through their dashboard through a spectating feature dubbed the PlayStation Eye. The watcher, apparently, won't even have to own the game they are spectating.

Kotaku's report hasn't been confirmed by Sony, and is based of anonymous sources, but much of its speculation should be put to rest by the end of the day by Sony itself.

Other rumored PlayStation features include a robust social networking experience that will allow for easy achievement and gameplay footage sharing. Sony has made it clear that it is attempting to focus on the PlayStation 4's connectivity and "nerve center" experience, rather than building a hardware spec'd beast.

What appears to be a picture of a PlayStation 4 controller prototype leaked out on the Internet recently (shown above), and if the final design is anything like what's shown, expect a touchscreen, microphone, and PlayStation Move bar built in to the actual peripheral.
