The all-new 2014 BMW X5 SUV is inching closer to its production release and spy photos by Car and Driver expose its size and proportions.

The third generation BMW X5 is similar in size to its predecessor, although it appears that the new version has more sporty proportions with its side windows extended further to the front of the vehicle and a more slanted roof that creates a sportier style.

A large grille is the centerpiece of the front of the new X5 SUV, while the head lamps are expected to resemble those of the latest BMW releases.

As far as the rear of the vehicle is concerned, illuminated guide strips and the addition of larger exhaust tips are expected.

Whether the weight of the X5 will be reduced remains to be seen, although it is unlikely considering that some of the newer models are even heavier than their predecessors like the BMW 5-series.

But the fuel efficiency of the next generation X5 is expected to improve and is estimated to be the best in its class in that category with a 3.0-liter six-turbo diesel engine.

There will also be a gasoline 3.0-liter turbocharged engine as well as a gasoline 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine expected to live under the hood of the new X5.

There are some reports that a hybrid will be available on the new X5 with speculation that the 3.0-liter N55 inline-six and electric motor ActiveHybrid seen on the 3 and 5-series BMWs could possibly be applied to the new model SUV.

Eight-speed automatics are expected for the third generation X5 as well as engine stop and start systems that will most likely be available across the board to improve fuel efficiency.

There is not an official release date for 2014 BMW X5 yet, but sales are expected to begin sometime in the second half of the year with an estimated debut at either the New York or Shanghai auto shows.
