This weekend four new releases will hit movie theaters in hopes of beating out Melissa McCarthy's "Identity Thief."
The first new release of the weekend is "A Good Day Die Hard" starring Bruce Willis and Jay Courtney. The movie follows John McClane who travels to Russia to help out his son, Jack. On his way to he discovers that Jack is a CIA operative working to prevent a nuclear-weapons heist. The film scored negative reviews but is slated to make $50 million over the weekend.
The second release is "Safe Haven" starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. The filmed opened on Valentine's Day and should have a great boost from the Thursday's gross. "Haven" tells the story of a young woman with a mysterious past who lands in Southport, North Carolina. There she forms a bond with a widower who forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her. Like "Die Hard" the film has been badly received but is expected to score $20 million.
The third film "Beautiful Creatures" opens with mixed reviews. "Creatures" has been compared to "Twilight" but does not have the same audience. The film tells the story of Ethan and Lena who uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history, and their town. Warner Brothers is estimating the film to make over $20 million.
"Escape from Planet Earth" also opens nationwide. The film is the first family oriented movie of the year and stars Jessica Alba, Sofia Vergara, and George Lopez. However with the lack of marketing from the Weinstein Company, "Planet" is expected to make $10 million.
The Academy Award nominee "No" will open in New York and Los Angeles while IFC's "Like Someone in Love" will receive a limited bow in New York and on Demand.
