Penelope Cruz will star in Ridley Scott’s new film “The Counselor” and is rumored to star in Pedro Almodovar’s new comedy ‘Standyby lovers’.

Cruz will be joining Michael Fassbender (Prometheus), husband Javier Bardem (Biutiful), Cameron Diaz (Bad Teacher), and Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life) in Scott's latest project. The news comes confirms a rumor that had circulated in April. "The Counselor" will be based on a script by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) and Cruz will play Laura, the fiancée of the titular lawyer who finds himself caught up in the drug trade after making a few bad business decisions. The film is slated to start production in late summer or early fall and is expected to be released in 2013.

Dealine also reports that Cruz is looking to reteam with Pedro Almodóvar for her fifth film with the auteur. She had previously worked with him on “Volver”, “Broken Embraces”, “All About My Mother,” and “Live Flesh.” According to Deadline, she will play an undisclosed part in his next film, “Standby Lovers”. The film, described as a dark comedy, revolves around a group of airplane passengers traveling to Mexico City who are provoked into colorful confessions when they are placed in a life-threatening situation.

If rumors are true Cruz would be joining a cast of Almodovar actors which include Javier Cámara (Talk to Her), Cecilia Roth (All About My Mother), Lola Dueñas (Volver) José María Yazpik (The Burning Plain), Carlos Areces(Extraterrestrial), Raúl Arévalo, and Paz Vega (Spanglish). The film is expected to shoot this summer in Spain and to be released by Sony Pictures Classic in 2013.

Cruz will next be seen in Wood Allen’s comedy “To Rome with Love” starting June 22, 2012. Cruz is repped by CAA, Untitled and Spain-based Katrina Bayonas. Cruz, an Oscar Winner, is married to fellow Spaniard and Oscar Winner Javier Bardem. She gave birth to their first son Leonardo in January 2011.
