Rihanna and Chris Brown got cozy last night at the Grammy Awards. They didn't perform together, but they were frequently seen snuggling in the audience.

Rihanna, who performed her new single "Stay" at the awards, showed off a large diamond ring on her left ring finger, which some speculated was an engagement ring.

The pair's blatant PDA prompted a Twitter debate over whether Brown and Rihanna should ever get back together, considering Brown's abusive history. In 2009, Brown savagely attacked Rihanna during an argument in his car. As the fight escalated, Brown reportedly threatened to kill Rihanna, and strangled her until she lost consciousness, at which point he fled the scene, according to E! Online's Ken Baker.

"Her right eye was blackened and badly swollen and she had hand prints on her arms," E! reported. "The responding officers were so concerned about her, they drove Riihanna to the hospital in their squad car instead of waiting for an ambulance."

But in recent weeks, Rihanna has shown affection for Brown in public, sparking rumors that they may be back together. She showed up to support Brown in court as he faced accusations of submitting fake community service records, according to The Hollywood Gossip, and the pair were seen leaving the courthouse arm-in-arm.

And after last night's cuddling at the Grammys, some Twitter users were shocked.

"I know they say time heals all wounds but damn! Some things should not be forgotten," said one user, posting a picture of Rihanna's battered face after Brown's 2009 attack with a pic of the couple nuzzling at last night's awards.

Some people had a different take. "I love how Rihanna sits next to Chris Brown and publicly goes out with him and hugs him and holds his hand," another Twitter user said. "They don't care about the world."
