As announced, the iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak will be released today by the hackers over at team evasi0n. But before you rush to download the new iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak, you have to make sure your device is compatible and ready.

But first, if you haven't implemented a jailbreak before on your iOS device, you have to know the basics. Cydia is an app for iOS that helps users find and install apps for an Apple device with jailbreak. You'll need this, or something like it, to install unapproved apps for iOS 6.1. If you already have Cydia and a jailbroken phone, do some research to make sure your favorite jailbreak apps are compatible with the iOS 6.1 jailbreak.

Of course, the most important factor is whether your hardware is compatible with the iOS 6.1 jailbreak or not. The good news is that most are. But anyone with an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch from 2011 (third generation) or before, a first generation iPad (2011), or a third-generation Apple TV will be sorely disappointed: it's just not for you.

If you do have a compatible iOS device, make sure to backup your data before attempting any of this. You never know what weird issues a jailbreak will create, especially one as rapidly produced and distributed as this one. You also never know if you'll end up having to do a clean install of the iOS 6.1 jailbreak, either because it takes less time or because it clears away any old preferences, settings, files, and apps that may be causing problems with the upgraded untethered jailbreak.

Also, when looking for the new iOS 6.1 jailbreak, make sure it's a website with the actual jailbreak, and not spam or malicious software. And keep checking with us for updates as they come along. We previously reported evasi0n's jailbreak download website, which is here.
